The world’s first Chinese herbal DNA barcode high-throughput gene sequencing machine officially released

2019-05-11

On April 26, 2019, the Chinese herbal medicine DNA barcode high-throughput gene sequencing integrated machine jointly developed by the Institute of Chinese Medicine of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "Chinese Medicine Research Institute") and MGI Technology Co., Ltd. completed the acceptance review in Beijing and was officially released. This is also the world's first intelligent identification instrument for sequencing Chinese herbal medicine genes. It can accurately, quickly, easily and stably identify Chinese herbal medicine samples, which will promote the identification of Chinese medicines into the era of standardized intelligence, with great scientific research and industrial value. Professor Chen Shilin, Director of the Institute of Chinese Medicine; MGI CEO Mu Feng; Professor Qian Zhongzhi, the chief scientist of the National Pharmacopoeia Commission, and many other well-known experts attended the review.

Because of the variety of Chinese herbal medicines and the difficulty in identifying their authenticity, the development of Chinese medicine industry has faced obstacles in international markets. The lack of traditional Chinese medicine safety incidents caused by the effective identification of toxic Chinese medicinal materials has even become an international focus. The international method for accurately identifying the original species of herbal roots has become an indispensable tool for the development of the Chinese medicine industry.

In this context, the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and MGI worked together to develop a Chinese herbal DNA barcode high-throughput sequencing machine based on the Chinese herbal medicine DNA barcode species identification system and MGI's high-throughput gene sequencing platform. The instrument solves the problem of high-throughput sequencing read length by fragmentation sequencing and alignment splicing; solves the crosstalk problem between amplicon by DNBSEQ? technology; can realize one-stop sequence processing, complete from original sequence to species identification. Using a base ratio instead of a generation of sequence fluorescence intensity peak map, the process could achieve a more accurate display of sequence details. The research team conquered the upstream barriers of the industrial chain, completed the independent intellectual property rights and localization of hardware instruments, and eliminated the dependence of Chinese herbal medicine genetic identification on foreign instruments.

The Chinese herbal DNA barcode high-throughput sequencing integrated machine has wide application in the field of Chinese herbal medicine identification. For example, it can be applied to field cultivation, identify seed seedling varieties, and ensure planting accuracy; it can be used in clinical medicine, accurately identify species, and guide doctors in diagnosis and treatment; application. In the field of Chinese herbal medicine circulation supervision, it can effectively realize the digital supervision of the circulation of Chinese herbal medicines, and promote the modernization and internationalization Chinese herbal medicine regulations.. The Chinese herbal DNA barcode high-throughput sequencing machine opens the door to the first non-human consumer application.

Professor Chen Shilin, director of the Institute of Chinese Medicine, said that many instruments of traditional Chinese medicine research come from abroad, and the use is limited

everywhere, which seriously affects the development of Chinese medicine research projects. Cooperation with MGI to develop instruments with independent property rightsis a huge step forward for industry development and  international competition.

At the meeting, a panel of experts from the industry reviewed the functional and innovative aspects of the instrument, including Professor Qian Zhongzhi, Chief Scientist of the National Pharmacopoeia Commission, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, Professor Tao Zulai, Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of

Sciences, Professor Lu Aiping, School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University, Research Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tsinghua University Prof. Luo Guoan, Professor, and Professor Zhang Qiang, Director of Peking University School of Pharmacy. The expert group unanimously believes that HMBI-G30  has superior performance. Through large-scale and multi-batch experiments, it breaks through the limitations of one-stage sequencing of one-stage sequencing technology, simplifying the cumbersome biological information process, and it can be accurate, fast and simple. Stable identification of Chinese herbal medicine samples. Turning the traditional Chinese herbal medicine identification process into a sophisticated and automated “one basket” genetic identification instrument is a leading and epoch-making high-tech product. The release of HMBI-G30 means that the identification of Chinese herbal medicine genes from artificial to intelligent, from low-throughput and low-precision to high-throughput and high-precision.

Professor Qian Zhongzhi, who participated in the review, said that the Chinese Medicine Research Institute and the MGI team have done a very good job in applying technology to the identification of Chinese herbal medicines. "From the perspective of the ChinesePharmacopoeia, this instrument turns the previously modular equipment into an integrated workstation. From the perspective of supervision and inspection and quarantine, this instrument can save time and support technical breakthroughs."

Professor Zhang Qiang said that the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and MGI have combined the latest technology in the oldest field and made the most creative breakthroughs, from zero to one innovation.

Professor Luo Guoan expressed his appreciation. He said that this is a technology that can be replicated and promoted, and is a technology that Chinese scientists lead the world. Products that are strongly integrated by scientific research units and enterprises are expected to rapidly expand and occupy the international market.

After the jury, MGI CEO Mu Feng delivered a summary speech on behalf of the instrument intelligence team. He mentioned that Chinese medicine is profound and profound. The techniques and tools for interpreting traditional Chinese medicine should be in the hands of the Chinese people and establish the standard of Chinese herbal medicine with independent technology. MGI is willing to provide technical and tool support for Chinese herbal medicine from scientific research, to application to industrial development, in order to promote the development of the Chinese herbal medicine industry.

The industry believes that the Chinese herbal medicine DNA barcode high-throughput sequencing integrated machine marks the successful upgrade of the independent intellectual property rights from hardware to software in the field of medicinal plant molecular identification, and has eliminateddepedence on external sources from the instrument to the database, using plant identification to fully transcend from running to leading in medicine.
